Victoria II gets out of the house, goes into Africa -Score: 4/5 at Quarter to Three“Victoria is one of the most Important strategy games ever made. After the jump, yeah, I just spelled important with a capital I.Victoria II presents history as something that happens because of populations rather than something achieved by individuals or mandated by governments. Three Moves Ahead Episode 217 - VICTORIA DAYNEW! Review: Victoria II: Heart of Darkness - Carve up the world - Score 8,5/10 at Destructoid'Put in the work, however, and Heart of Darkness will reward you for the effort. It's still huge and uncompromising, but there's no better way to experience Victoria II.
The improved combat and naval mechanics were oft-requested, and Paradox followed through, while the new features make the studio's vision of Victorian war, politics, and economics all the more believable and grand.' Victoria II: Heart of Darkness review at Avault - Score 4,5/5 & Verdict: Buy it!“at the end of the day, I feel more like Otto von Bismark after playing a game of HoD than any other game on the market right now.If that’s not an indication of success, then I don’t know what is.NEW! Victoria II: Heart of Darkness review at Icrontic“All in all, this is a fantastic expansion and I have already sunk quite a bit of time into the game in the week or so that I’ve had it. It adds quite a bit to the game and makes it nearly brand new.
I hadn’t played Victoria II in several months—since it’s been awhile since the last expansion, but this addition has definitely reignited my interest in the game. If you have any interest in the time period between 1835 – 1935 you should definitely pick this game up.”New! Victoria II: Heart of Darkness review at PcGamesN – Score: 8/10“a strategic epic about high stakes politics during a time of massive upheaval.”Video PC Game Review: Victoria II: Heart of Darkness at Wargamervideo=youtube;y5TOM92aGAYof Darkness does not introduce an new campaign but instead provides a comprehensive overhaul to the way Victoria II is played with the introduction of monumental features such as a new 'Colonial System', a 'Crisis System', newspapers, overhauled naval combat and a series of other minor additions.NEW! Victoria II Heart of Darkness Review at Softpedia - Score: 8,5/10'Heart of Darkness has quite a few improvements and new mechanics and it’s a worthy purchase for any player who is interested in dominating Europe and the world during the XIX and the early XX century. With Victoria II, the improvements aren’t necessarily front and center, but as time progresses, they come to light and increase the depth of the experience.'

Reviews “This is a wonderfully deep game, and its sandbox nature is much more open than Hearts of Iron III was and so it's much more enjoyable at the beginning.
Victoria II: Heart of Darkness: Stoking the Fires of Rebellion - Review at RTS Guru- Score: 8/10“So, what happened to my people? Well, they definitely became more and more liberal and increasingly rioted and rebelled over time, with territories uneasy and rebel groups taking root. “Victoria II Heart of Darkness Review at – Score 8/10'The Heart of Darkness expansion, despite the name, does not focus purely on Africa, but instead adds a number of new mechanics that were instrumental in the struggles that occurred on the continent while the European powers were involved. There are crisis events where each country must pick a side and then deal with the consequences, often triggered by less important nations they can often embroil much larger countries into trouble or all-out war over territories hundreds, if not thousands of miles from their borders. In some ways this is an amazing educational tool, explaining how things like the Crimean War ever came to pass and the frustration you feel as a leader of a major power being sucked into a victorless conflict is palpable. The expansion also beefs up naval combat to make composition important and allow smaller fleets to defeat larger powers through tactics and clever strategy. The war for the sea becomes key as you race to establish your colonies, the final new major feature, and it becomes surprisingly easy (especially in multiplayer) to prevent reinforcements from ever reaching the front lines if you can keep a decent (although costly) Navy going.
Combat is still much less exciting than something like the Total War series, but in some ways this can be seen as a positive as you don’t enter wars for the spectacle, you avoid them due to the cost and the strain it involves.' You can focus almost entirely on internal turmoil like I have so far, watching your people become more politically aware and active by making decisions granting them consciousness and then watching how they react, or you could rule with more of an iron fist should you so choose.”Victoria II: before there was Abba at QuartertoThreeNEW!
AV: The developer diaries have mentioned that there is a colonial influence race when multiple countries try to colonize an area. What actions can a player take to speed up their own colonization, or hamper the colonization efforts of others?DB: It all comes down to how many colonial points you are willing to use in Heart of Darkness. At the most basic level, it’s a bidding war. Can you really afford to throw more and more points into this one area instead of picking up less-fought-over states? You need to decide how many points you’re willing to invest for your pretty borders. On the other hand, getting into a colonial race with someone speeds up the generation of war justifications, so you could always whip one up and then just fight them for the colony afterwards. Unlike in previous versions, the presence of troops in the area doesn’t speed up the colonization process, but it does further speed war justifying.Find out more:NEW!
Victoria 2: Heart of Darkness interview live at PC Gamer“The second expansion for Paradox’s 19th/20th Century global grand strategy sandbox, Victoria II, is set to release in just a couple weeks. It’s bringing improvements to just about all of the game’s rabbit-hole-deep systems, from naval combat to colonization to the complex, dynamic economy and politics.
We had our secret police round up Game Designer Chris King to ask about all of these changes, which you can read more about in the official developer diaries.”NEW! Getting the lowdown on Victoria II: Heart of Darkness at DestructoidI've been seeking new challenges recently, though, and after Paradox announced a new expansion to Victoria II, Heart of Darkness, I decided to spend more time with the complex political and economic simulator. I'm glad that I did, because it's really got its hooks in me now. With the Heart of Darkness' release drawing ever closer, I had a chat with designer David Ballantyne to get the skinny on the latest expansion.NEW! Victoria II: Heart of Darkness - Interview with Designer Chris King at SoftpediaSoftpedia: Are you afraid that the new limitations on Big Ship building will generate a strong reaction among players who love to create colonial empires with minor nations?Chris King: Our goal is to make naval technology more important for colonial powers in Victoria II. There is still nothing stopping someone playing a minor country and colonizing, not at all. All we are saying is that you had had better invested in your naval technology and built up your naval infrastructure to do it.Read more:NEW! Paradox Dishes on Victoria II: Heart of Darkness - Interview at RTS GuruWe caught up with Paradox' own David 'Darkrenown' Ballantyne to talk about all things Victoria II: Heart of Darkness, the forthcoming major expansion to the grand strategy title.Victoria II: Heart of Darkness Interview at Strategy Informer'Despite continual gloomy proclamations by some individuals in the games industry, strategy gaming on the PC appears to be in rude health in 2013, including that traditionally most niche of genres: the historical grand strategy title.
We spoke to Victoria II game designer Chris King about upcoming expansion Heart of Darkness, his own background in Paradox's Development Studio and historical gaming and why he thinks its popularity is on the rise once again.' Victoria II: Heart of Darkness Interview at Tacticular Cancer'I would say the naval system rework is the most important in Victoria II: Heart of Darkness. Because we have received consistent feedback from our fans that they felt the naval combat system was a point of weakness in the game. The new system is vast leap forward over the previous system and should add to the enjoyment of fans of the series.Firstly, we have also added some new stats to units, with the right inventions both Commerce Raiders and Cruisers can fire Torpedoes in combat, which have the potential to do massive damage to capital ships. Light ships also now have an Evasion stat which allows them to avoid some of the shots sent their way. We have re-done naval combat so that ships have a position, speed, and firing range in combat, so they must pick an enemy ship to target and move into range to engage them. Should the ship later want to break off, they will need to retreat for a time until they can get outside their opponent's gunnery range to be safe.'
